Oregon Sand Dunes to Crater Lake (New Posts on the last two pages. Just click: older post)

The morning we decided to leave the shores and head towards the sand dunes was overcast and chilly. Bad situations had never stopped us before so with our sweatshirts and rain-jackets handy we ran up and down the dunes, took a few pictures and left towards Crater Lake.

Arriving after dark, we slept in the park that night and had an early start the next day.

Our first stop was the pinnacles. These cone-shaped rock formations were formed over 7,000 years ago with the eruption of Mt. Mazama. As the hot gases and rock rolled down the mountain they left very deep deposits behind. When the rock cooled, gases tried to escape and in doing so, created these cones. Throughout time, streams have eroded through the canyons, exposing these cones. Unfortunately, there is no hiking path to the bottom of the pinnacles. Regardless the view from the top is outstanding.

We then drove to and around the breathtaking blue lake, reaching an elevation of 8,000 ft.

Finishing the drive before lunch, we picked up the little guy and drove out of the park, stopping at Vidae falls towards Grants Pass OR,where we called it a night.
