Pecos National Historical Park

The next morning we hiked through the old ruins at Pecos National Monument.

The village of the Pecos people (the monument) sits high on a grassy hill between two rivers. The village was once used as the main trading area between the Pueblo farmers and the hunting tribes from the buffalo plains.

The Pueblo period ended with the invasion of the Spaniards in the late 1500’s. The village then began to expand with new buildings, most of which were used as religious sanctuaries.

Although the sun was shining bright we still had to layer up. Bundled with our winter hats and gloves on we were able to walk through the village. We past several foundations and walked through the primary church.

It was an interesting and informative walk but nothing made us happier than returning to the warm car.

By three we had driven through Albuquerque and had settled in for the night at the home of a good family friend. Thanks again Ann!
